the one about the cleaver

Happy Halloween! The official start of the holiday season! Tomorrow Christmas music will come on in my house and there is nothing Iron Man can do but get ear plugs!! HOLLA!

I realized something on Thursday while talking to some blog friends . . . something I always assumed people knew, but as I was saying it out loud it hit me that most people don’t actually know. I’ve always thought I’m very open about my life here on the blog and do lots of personal posts, but the reaction of the 5 people I told was absolutely priceless and showed me that I don’t do as much as I think I do . . .

So for Friday 5 here’s 5 weird things you don’t know about Bex . . .

402008_10100099680481893_216427083_n

1. The one about the cleaver . . . Butcher is my maiden name. That’s where the blog name came from. I’m proud to be a Stark and represent my husband in that way, but I will always be a Butcher. For valentines day the year before we got married, Iron Man got me a tiny, dainty cleaver necklace which people tell me is creepy. A few notes about names – a. no one outside of blogging calls me Bex except my Mom. They call me Bekah and if you’re adorable and under the age of 18 you can call me Beky b. I changed my name in 7th grade to start going by my middle name. Krys . . . No one calls me that now either except my Mom. c. People do however call me Butcher. d. I don’t call him Iron Man in real life. His name is Scott, and he has a strong resemblance to Michael C Hall. Who played Dexter . . . who used a cleaver . . . this isn’t creepy at all . . .

Should I also mention my sarcasm . . .

SB_4129_3530

2. I hated the color purple until about 7 years ago. I like to think in my head that I was a hipster before hipsters were real . . . that’s if a hipster is someone who dislikes something just for the sake of being different . . . so I ‘hated’ pink and purple until one day I decided I was over it and now I’m making up for lost time . . . PURPLE EVERYTHING

fambam

3. I know I’ve talked about my nieces and nephews a lot on the blog, but I’ve never really talked about where they come from . . . I have 2 sisters and a brother – in that order. Now here’s the kicker . . . They were 18,16, and 15 when I was born. My mom was 40 . . . I was a SURPRISE! My brother used to tell me my mom was very upset when she found out she was pregnant . . . like suicidal (this is not true) . . . oddly enough I am the typical kid sister that thinks he is the bomb.com. From them I have 5 nephews and 1 niece (who is very close to my age) – from her I have 2 great nephews and 1 great niece. They are the ones you see on here the most because the rest of them are teenagers and they are too cool for school.

4. Physical attributes :: my feet are usually crossed over one another and my left foot is always twirling . . . always. I also laugh like an old man. It’s either a little giggle, or I can’t control it. And if I can’t control it I will weeze – literally weeze – like an old man. I used to be so embarrassed, but now I think it’s the most awesome thing ever and it makes me laugh harder.

1928990_507385568673_298_n

5. My biggest pet peeve is loud chewers. It’s a neurological disorder called Misophonia . . . It’s probably not to the level of being the actual disorder. Other things have to have happened to put me in the right mood to where it angers me. But it is very irritating. For example if we were sitting at a quiet dinner and I could hear you chew I would have to stop eating or move away from you. I would then always find reasons to never eat with you again. Iron Man is the loudest chewer I’ve ever met …

Gosh, I’m a weirdo. And I love it. What are some weird things about you?

the one with Owl Apples

When it comes to Halloween, I’m a little bit obsessive with making a themed dinner. I have big plans for pumpkin pizza and witches fingers tomorrow! For dessert we’ll be having Owls (Owl Apples).

the one with diy halloween costumes

I hate spending more than $20 or so on a Halloween costume. I know, it makes it hard . . . but I hate spending more than $20 on a regular shirt that I’ll be wearing often so why would I do it for something to wear 1 night.

I usually end up making a lot of my costume, and the last 2 have definitely been my favorites. So today I’m going to share how I made my DIY Halloween Costumes!

Last years was the easiest ever . . . I was Medusa.

1383873_10100846291896633_2013109204_n 1390779_10100846291362703_872429452_n

It took me 5 minutes to hot glue some toy snakes to my headband. For my makeup I wore fake lashes and major cat eye liner with a nude lip – before we left I wrapped a white sheet around me like a toga with gold sandles and off we went! I had the makeup, sandles, and sheet so this one cost me $25 – I’m sure I could have found a cheaper headband, but I already had this one I just hadn’t used it for anything. The good news is the snakes came off pretty easy and now I wear it normally. If you don’t have a white sheet – check Walmart they have cheap sheets (and of course goodwill)!

and my husband was a stoner . . . because when you look at Medusa you turn to stone. Also, he’s weird and refuses to do corny couples costumes.

He also says costumes weird . . . so nobody wants to do a couple costume with you anyway iron man . . . I’m a little bitter.

Moving on, This year I was Mary Poppins!

IMG_4220

Again, it was really easy! Not as easy as Medusa, but cheaper! I purchased this hat and bowtie on Amazon. The flowers were from JoAnn’s along with the red circles which are actually fake strawberries. The plan was to get felt balls, but these ended up being cheaper. I’m sure you can guess how I got them on there – hot glue.

IMG_4129

For the umbrella, I got real crafty and paper mached. Is that a word? I hadn’t used paper mache since 5th grade . . . so lots of googling was done . . . To make the shape I covered the handle in foil, then rolled balls of trash, paper to make a round head and add a beak, then covered it all in foil. Once my shape was where I wanted it, I mixed up a half cup of flour with a cup of water drenched white paper in it and covered the foil. After it dried up – I let it set for almost 2 days before I touched it but they say overnight will do – I just used white, black, green, and blue paint to make it look somewhat like it does in the movie. I’m not a good painter so up close it’s not so hot, but I’m happy with it.

a black skirt, tights, white button up, and red lipstick later . . . Mary Poppins was ready for her debut!

This one cost me $20 exactly – hat, bowtie, flowers, and red balls. The rest I had on hand – and the umbrella I’m hoping to get the paper mache off and use again . . . but I have one more party to wear it to first.

What are your favorite costumes? Anyone else DIY?

I also have a little something special for you guys today! My grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. She is ornery, stubborn, can’t hear a lick, but she’s funny and she’s a fighter. So what better way to honor her than to round out breast cancer month than with this . . .

the one about our DIY tile backsplash

Sometimes you start a project that you think will be easy and quick. And then it takes you 10 hours. That was our DIY tile backsplash.

7stepstobacksplashwithoutmortar

I checked out many blogs . . . mostly yhl (a moment of silence) …………………………………………………..

decor and the dog, and bhg. We’re avid DIY and we had my dad helping who has worked with tile before. So this seemed easy enough especially if we used a tile mat instead of mortar.

From there it was simple, but it took us some time. Here’s the 7 steps we took to get there – 2 of which are optional, but recommended.

IMG_4115

Step 1: Cut the tile mat to fit your square footage. We used a permanent marker and drew out the measurements so it was fairly easy.

IMG_4136

Step 2: Apply the tile mat to the area. It’s like a Band-Aid  – you peel the covering off and then put the sticky side to the wall. We used our j-roller to smooth things out and make sure every single inch was stuck.

IMG_4114

Step 3: Apply your tiles. Take the covering off the front of the tile mat – you can do all of it at the same time, but I’d recommend starting with a smaller area and working your way to the finish line. We found that starting at the bottom – closest to the countertops – and working our way up was easiest. Be sure to use spacers so that everything is even. You will most likely need to cut some tiles to fit around outlets, weird corners, and at the top. We had to cut them to fit at the very top underneath the cabinets and around outlets. We used this one, and were very pleased. What you have to cut is going to be up to your specific area and what tiles you choose – ones with mesh backing will most likely be easier and you might even get lucky and only have to cut mesh.  So my only tips are to have patience and be sure your measurements are accurate.

This is the step that took us a while. We had about 25sqft to do and ours was 1 tile at a time with lots of weird angles so that might have something to do with it. We started about 2pm Saturday. It was later than we wanted, but we thought we should still be able to be done that night if not Sunday. Well about 6 it was obvious we weren’t going to get done that night so we stopped – then Sunday life got in the way.  We came back at 6 on Monday and worked until 9 – then came back about 4 on Tuesday and were finally done with tiles about 5. But from there we still had about 2 hours of work left . . .

IMG_4131

Step 4: Grout it all. Again I would recommend doing small sections at a time. That way your tiles won’t move while the spacers are out. We took the spacers out of a small area, applied the grout, and then as one person moved on the other would clean the grout off. We also applied a small amount of white caulking to the bottom – nearest the countertops.

Step 5: Sit at your kitchen table and ignore the mess around you while you realize you’re finally done  . . .  almost

IMG_4165 Step 6: Deep clean your countertops and kitchen floor. Your kitchen is gonna get like Christina Aguilera in 2002 dirty . . . and everything you did have perfectly placed on countertops will need put back into place. I guess this step could be optional too . . . if you’re a different kind of weird than I am.

Step 7: After it dries (overnight) and everything is cleaned well, seal your grout. We used this grout sealer, and did 2 coats. This is the 2nd optional step. You don’t have to seal it, but I don’t know why you wouldn’t. And I’m sure you’d regret if you didn’t. It costs $8 and takes 5 minutes so it’s more than worth it.

Now for the price breakdown . . .

Tile cutter : $20

Tiles from Menards : $30

grout and sealer:  $15

Supplies (spacers, sponge, trowel) : $10

Tile mat : $50

Total :: $120 – if we would have went with thin set instead of the tile mat, we would have saved about $30.

IMG_4166

Not bad! We had originally budgeted $200, but then we found the tile we wanted so cheap, quality, and then on sale! For this project we did get under our original budget, but this was our last project in the original budget for all house updates, and it did set us over that. Not by much – and those details are for another time 🙂

kitchenprogress

The kitchen is mostly finished now, just a few finishing touches! I hope to share the final pictures of this room with you next week along with the budget breakdown! I just have to convince Iron Man to help me hang some shelves . . .

Have you ever had a project take you much longer than expected?

Welcome to the Let’s Be Friends Blog Hop!

A blog hop is a set time frame for current or aspiring bloggers to find new blogs and quality content. It is a great way to make new friends and find inspiration! It is also a fabulous way to promote your own blog and posts.

Dear Friends,

What a day to celebrate! This is the 89th week of the Let’s Be Friends blog hop! Thanks for joining us on this special day. Chelsee and Tiffany are extremely delighted to see the way this hop has grown and love to see your faces each week!

Join us every Tuesday at 7am (MST). This blog hop focuses on content. LINK UP YOUR FAVORITE POST from last week in this fun content-sharing blog hop! I love the idea of blog hopping, but I love the idea of reading posts and quality content on new blogs I’ve never been to even more. Instead of simply linking up your blog button, you are now able to link up your favorite post you recently wrote. Have a delicious recipe to share, DIY tutorial, or heartfelt post? Share it with us! All hosts and co-hosts put up some unique and fun content from the past week. Make sure to check them out. P.S.- you may still link up your blog button and blog name, but it is encouraged to link up your favorite post instead. You will get more page views and interest if you do so! Some of the most successful blog hops I have participate in focus on content rather than just exchanging follows. You never know who will become a loyal follower or pin that delicious new recipe you posted!

The BEST part of this blog hop? Each week there will be a WINNER! That’s right, each week we will choose one lucky blog to feature from the previous week’s hop. Capsule Wardrobe #2 and a Target giveaway!

4 more outfits to share from my capsule wardrobe today. These pictures are coming to you the week after I wore them, and it’s fun to look back and remember what I did and why I chose those outfits. In all the pictures from last week . . . I had bronchitis, but I think I hid it well. haha! This week I was healthy again and decided to get a little more organized with my capsule wardrobe posts so they’re not so messy, have cohesive pictures, and aren’t so boring 😉 I’ll share each outfit, what I wore it to, some weekly thoughts/things to be grateful for, and then my favorite outfit of the week.

Here we go for week 2!

thoughts:

It’s starting to get cold. winter is officially on it’s way in and the leaves are a fallen. So layering and stepping my game up is happening this week.

I’ve always hated mirror selfies, but I think those are gonna be my best bet for consistent pictures in decent to good lighting. it’s dark when I leave and it’s near dark when I get home from work – soon to be dark when I get home. so I’m trying to figure out the best lighting solution.

My favorite outfit of the week was my flannel shirt – which I wore to go apple picking with my favorite 8 year old.

the one about life with Mrs. G and the Artist!

I have something so exciting for you guys today. A fellow hoosier, blogger to meet!! It is weird for me to think that just 2 months ago I had never met this girl in real life. Fast forward to today and she is one my best friends. I know you all will love her just as much as I do so be sure to check out her bliggity blog!
Tell us about you in 3 sentences.
I’ve been married to my wonderful husband, LG for 12 years. We have a puggle named max. We are very involved in our church and I love to blog!
What are you dressing up as for Halloween?
Well, I don’t always dress up. It’s not my favorite holiday. BUT last year we had a couples costume party and I think we might this year and so if we do I hope to go as a character from ONCE!! Or close to a character from there. 🙂
Bex says :: Halloween is not my favorite Holiday either. I’m a big fan of holidays tho so I must participate. ONCE is a great choice! I would totally be Ginnifer Goodwin’s version of Snow.
lifewithmrsg1
  how did you meet LG?
LG and I had mutual friends that introduced us but then most of our dating was through email and weekend dates.
Bex says :: I love your relationship with him. I hope Scott and I are that strong after 12 years!
 Peeta or Gale?
Sooo…I’m not a huge fan of the hunger games just yet and I’ve only seen the first movie so..I don’t have all the facts for either but right now I think I like Peeta but I do like that Gale took care of her family for her.
Bex says :: We’re gonna need you to be be a fan by November so we can go see the movie together, ok? ok!
What are you 2 favorite blogs to follow daily – not including Butcher’s niche of course 🙂
Well, I of course love yours but two others would be Cassie of Sage the blog and then Sarah from 12 twentyseven
Bex says :: I love those girls too! Can’t wait for Influence 2015 when we’ll be roomies with Sassy Cassie!

the one with 5 social media tips

Yesterday on The So-Called Homemaker, I promised to touch base on how I keep up with social media as a blogger so for Friday 5 I thought I’d share 5 social media tips for bloggers!

socialmediatipsforbloggers

1. First and foremost, have a schedule. this post from Jana really started that for me. I had just downloaded Hootesuite a few weeks before, but for some reason it just hadn’t really hit me to schedule it out more than a couple hours before. when I saw her post I immediately came up with my own schedule.

2. Once you’ve got your schedule – go ahead and download hootsuite and latergram so you can write those posts out each morning instead of each hour. No one has the time to get on social media every hour so use these apps to help! It’s what they are there for. I jump on hootesuite for about 10 minutes every morning and schedule out most of the following for the day. On Mondays I get on latergram and schedule a post picture and an inspirable quote for each day – it takes 5 extra minutes, and I don’t have to worry about instagram unless I want to post something personal.

3dayexampleofsocialmediatips

3. Be authentic – where it says share or open. I try to actually get on twitter around that hour and say something from me directly about my day. If all my tweets are scheduled it’s going to eventually be noticeable – and that’s a turn off. It’s important to do 1 and 2 to keep engaging with our readers and be sure our blogs are noticed, but it can’t all be scheduled.

4. talk to people – especially other bloggers. If you like a post she linked to – favorite it. if you don’t want to comment on her blog then send her a comment on twitter. I need to be better about this, but the little I have done it I can so see the benefits! That person will see that not only do you read their blog you interact/follow them on social media so if they haven’t already checked out your blog they will. I’ve done this myself with people interacting with me on twitter so I know it works.

5. Have fun and don’t stress – don’t have time to get on hootesuite one morning? it’ll be ok. haven’t posted on instagram in 3 days that’s fine. we can only do what we can do.

My blogging bestie faith nominated me for a little behind the scenes/writing process post, and I thought those questions would go right along with this . . .

What are you working on right now?

My capsule wardrobe, and some holiday themed post ideas. I’m a planner so late October is when I start finalizing Holiday ideas and thinking towards the New Year. On that note, I’m also trying to sort through some ideas of some series I’d like to start in the new year. I’ve really taken the bull by the horns in the past 3 months as far as this blog goes and treating it like a business. Since doing that I’m also trying to stream line things a bit more and be a more consistently ‘style related’ with a few recipes and random posts thrown in.

How does your work differ from others in its genre? Why do you write what you do?

This one is hard . . . My initial thought is does it differ? But, of course, it does. No one can be me. I think my dry sense of humor comes out in my writing which I don’t find on other style posts. Also being a style blog I do a lot more DIY than usual. I’ve found it’s the new thing for bloggers to show behind the scenes type things lately. Sort of like what a normal day is without the house picked up or days when you don’t have that outfit on point and I try to do that every day on every post. My outfit may look awesome, but if I wouldn’t normally iron that shirt I’m not going to do it just for a blog post. I will admit that the only times I make the bed are when blog pictures need taken or company is coming over.

How does your writing process work?

the quick and easy of it, is I find time every week to schedule out ideas and get some posts rolling. I have ideas scheduled a month out and finalized 2 weeks out – except Fridays. So next weeks posts have been written this week and the week after that I’ve gotten the ideas finalized so I begin working on them – next week I will write those posts. For example, yesterday my etsy swap was posted, next Thursday I’m sharing a recipe and it is ready and scheduled, the Thursday after that I’m posting about some beauty products I used in October so this week I finalized those items and took the pictures – that post will be written next week.  I like to do that so if it doesn’t turn out I have time to come up with something else, and by staying only 2 weeks out I can keep up to date. I don’t necessarily write everyday just as I get time, but I touch base with the blog every morning to do some social media things, respond to comments and so on – it takes about 30 minutes. When I write a post I just write it out, then add the pictures, then I go through my SEO plugin (by yoast) and update to get the green light, and then I go back and edit before scheduling it. Nothing fancy 🙂 WordPress plugins make it super easy to be sure links are good and seo is good. So my main concerns are good pictures and clear words :).

As soon as the kitchen reveal is all done next week, I’m going to tell you all about the office where all this blogging goes down 🙂

What’s your writing process like? Are you a planner too?

the one with the etsy swap reveal

It’s etsy swap reveal today, and I must tell you my partner did such a great job. I am so, so very thankful! I’m pretty sure Natalie at Polkadots and Pampers stalked the blog for weeks on end or maybe even dropped by my house and spoke to Iron Man. Everything was stuff I would pick out myself – she completely hit the nail on the head. It was a nice assortment of jewelry, some notecards from target, a pretty bag, some beauty supplies. and a lovely bee necklace from pink chemistry.

etsyswap2014

thank you so much Natalie! I got Jess and I hope she loved her goodies! I’m a horrible person and forgot to take a picture, but she is getting married so I got her a wifey mug from AshBotique. an assortment of washi tape from seamslikesusan, and you know I can’t pass up on giving the gift of garvin and co.

And a big thank you to Meg and Amy for hosting this awesome swap!

the one with products I don’t like anymore

upgradedbeautyproductsIn the past few months, I’ve shared some products in my favorites list that have actually ended up not being my favorites. So I wanted to share some of those with you today, and what ended up happening to make me take them off the list. I can’t have everything be negative up in here so I’ve also found a replacement. lips I have previously tooted the horn of baby lips. I was looking for a lip balm with a little color and I had heard so many good things so I got some. For the first month I loved it so I added it to my favorites. I have no idea what happened . . . but the longer period of time I used it the more almost raw my lips got. Sorry if that’s gross. Especially inside my mouth right inside my lips. I tried using it less times a day – I tried using it more times a day – but it only went away when I completely stopped. I do still occasionally use baby lips when I want that lip color, but rarely and not more than once a day. I’m sure this is just something with my lips and this product and I love other Maybelline products – this is definitely nothing against them. I found pixi at Target one day, picked it up, and haven’t looked back since. face wips I have also tooted the horn of the Burts Bees cleansing wipes. I do still like them, especially the smell, but I’ve learned they’re more makeup removing than cleansing. I just started to miss that clean and fresh feeling you got right after rinsing your face off. and as soon as I started using something else my face broke out . . . a sure sign the Burts Bees weren’t getting deep enough to get everything out. That also backs up that I thought they are more makeup removing than cleansing. I’m still using them to take my makeup off at night before I wash my face. But for cleansing I’m back to ponds . . . brushes the elf kabuki brush I also loved and used sooo much for my powder . . . but one day after 3 months of use I cleaned it and it totally fell apart . . . I bought another . . .  and it immediately fell apart. I’m cleaning them the same way I always have, and I’ve never had a problem with elf so I’m not sure what’s up.  I got the Mary Kay mineral powder brush and I love it. I’ve had it for almost 2 months now and washed it several times.

there we go! those are 3 products I’ve decided to nix from my list and why. Do you have any products you feel the same about?

now for something super special! I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited about a giveaway before. It’s been so rainy lately here in the Hoosier state. Perfect weather to curl up inside on the couch with a snuggly blanket, a good book, and mug of apple cider. But when you do have to venture outside in the rain, you might as well do it in style! I’ve been absolutely obsessed with Hunter Rain Boots for a while and I’ve teamed up with 13 other bloggers to bring you the chance to win your very own pair! You get to choose the color of course!

the one with a Butcherblock island

ikeabutcherblockIf you were here last week, you saw how we installed new laminate sheets to our already laminate countertops. We absolutely love the result. It’s added so much style and functionality to our most used room in the house.

the one part of the kitchen countertops I left out was our island. That’s because I’ve always dreamed of having a butcher-block island, and when I saw the price of ikea’s numerar I knew it was meant to be.

Installing this was even easier than installing the laminate. We (my dad) simply unscrewed the laminate from the cabinet base, then used our table saw to cut the butcher-block to size, sanded down the cut side, and screwed it into place where the laminate had been on top of the cabinet base.

boom. done. not quite . . .

I then applied 1 heavy coat of  waterlox and let it drive over night. Then repeated the same thing 2 more times – a total of 3 coats over 3 days.

boom. now you’re really done.

the best part, which I mentioned in last week’s post, our all new countertops cost us about $275. We are so happy with the results. Everything is sturdy, functional, food safe, and stylish. Next week the backsplash!

This is the 88th week of the Let’s Be Friends blog hop!

This hop receives thousands of page views every week, so your blog will have the chance to be center stage for free. You must follow all the hosts and co-hosts in order to win. Only those who link up a specific post are eligible to be featured! *You must follow all the hosts and co-hosts in order to win.

The last exciting change is that the co-host spots will now be available to all sponsors of  The Dwelling Tree or Southern Beauty Guide. If you are interested in co-hosting the blog hop, email Tiffany or Chelsee about sponsorship opportunities and how to co-host the weekly hop!

There are a couple of great giveaways going on right now at Southern Beauty Guide and The Dwelling Tree. Go check them out! 🙂

***This weeks featured post from last week’s hop:

Hi friends! It’s Tiff today. Thank you all once again for continually linking up at our blog hop. It is such a fun time and I am so impressed each week with all the amazing posts. Please continue to link up an actual post instead of your blog. We want to keep reading your content and it makes it more fun to pick a winner!

… onto the winner!

I just loved this post by Ashley on how to successfully include your dogs in your wedding. I always love when weddings have their own personal touch, and doggies are such an important part of our lives! She gives really practical tips on how to make it happen. I actually think these tips are great for any sort of even dogs might be going. Anyways, whether you have a dog or not this post is great. The pics are awesome (I am a sucker for wedding pics!). She looked gorgeous on her wedding day, and had her furry babies with her. Love it!

Ashley’s blog, The Nashvillian, is a great blog full of awesome posts. BEAUTIFUL pictures and great posts. Go check The Nashvillian out and go follow Ashley

Keep posting awesome content! You make it so fun for us to read all your posts! If you can, please link up a specific post. It makes it easier for us to come and visit!

*Remember YOU can be next weeks winner! 🙂
