This week and next week’s recipe is coming to you on Tuesday so I can link up with some other bloggers!! YAY!
When I think of American foods I think hamburgers and pie. So when Natasha at Hello Happiness! posted about this link up with Nat Your Average Girl, Running From The Law, Meet the Sullivan’s, Strawberry Swing and Other Things, This Woman Cooks, Everyday Love, Love and Life Simplified and Words About Waverly. I knew I had to make some pie.
dough (or you can use a premade rollable pie crust)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
1/2 cup cold sour cream
3/4 cup Nutella
2 cups diced strawberries
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1 large egg
Crystal sanding sugar
Whisk together the flour, salt and baking powder in a large bowl. add the butter and mix it together with your fingers. stir in the sour cream. then knead the dough on floured surface until it’s workable – add more flour a teaspoon at a time if needed to be sure it’s not too sticky.
roll it out to 8x10ish rectangle – dust it with more flour and fold it 3 times.
repeat that and then wrap it up and refrigerate it for 30 minutes.
dice up your strawberries to 2 cups worth and toss with flour
preheat oven to 425
Remove the dough from the refrigerator and unfold it onto a well-floured surface. once it’s good and flattened again cut out as many shapes as you can – re-rolling the scraps as needed.
I chose to use a star shaped cookie cutter because I’m #merican. But you can just use circles if you want. You should get about 20 of each from the whole crust
Place half of the dough circles on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Spread some Nutella in the center (If you’d like to make these pie pops you should put in your stick now) and put a spoonful of strawberries on top of the nutella. then put a 2nd piece of dough on top of each filled piece and use a fork to crimp the edges together.
If you fill ’em up lots they will overflow like mine and not be perfectly pretty. But that’s not who I am . . . I want more nutella and more strawberries covered in sugar. 80% of my diet is paleo so the part that isn’t I enjoy to it’s full extent.
mix the egg with a little water and brush each pie then using a sharp knife, cut two or three vents on the top of each pie. Sprinkle the pies with crystal sanding sugar – you don’t have to do this, but why wouldn’t you? I picked up some American colored sugars 🙂
Bake the pies for about 15 minutes, or until they’re golden brown.
Remove the pies from the oven and allow them to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
